Saturday and Sunday, April 21 & 22, 2018
10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Join us April 21 & 22 for our next workshop, turning a paperback book into a hardback.
Participants will bring a paperback book for conversion to rounded and backed hardback case-bound book. We may or may not have time for labeling, but students are welcome to return to the bindery at a mutually convenient time to create a label for their book if desired. Students will also create a dust jacket using the original paperback cover. Books should be “trade paperback” sized (roughly 5″ x 7″ x 1″) as smaller “pocket paperbacks” will be difficult to work on for first timers. If you have questions about what to bring, please ask. The process involves slicing off the old spine, resewing using a whip stitch, creating false shoulders, gluing, rounding, shaping the spine, and creating a case.
The workshop is $125 and limited to 4 participants. All materials will be provided but students will bring their own paperbacks for conversion. Tools will be shared, so it may be beneficial to bring your own if you have them. Prior bookbinding experience preferred.
